Reduplication in Kodi: A Paradigm Function Account
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper investigates reduplication in Kodi, an under-documented and understudied language spoken Sumba Island, Nusa Tenggara Timur Province, eastern Indonesia. Reduplication Kodi shows various patterns that fall under two major types: full partial reduplication. Full mostly involves of the entire disyllabic base. In reduplication, salient are copied initial parts (a syllable a foot), internal part syllable), or final (foot) Furthermore, process serves to express semantic properties, such as verbal number pluractionality, indirect noun pluralization, attenuation numeral distributivity. It is argued (i) stress determines foot which reduplicated predictable from patterns, (ii) context triggers processes, (iii) framework theory (Generalized) Paradigm Function Morphology ((G)PFM) ( Stump 2001 , 2016 ; Stewart & 2007 Spencer 2013 Nikolaeva 2019 ) can satisfactorily capture how base process. study provides additional evidence support (G)PFM theory, arguably be extended handle complex reduplicative beyond Kodi.

A perceptual account for Cantonese vocative reduplication
Both phonological and morphological reasons have been suggested to account for mismatched elements in reduplicative outputs (e.g. gbóná is reduplicated as gbí-gbóná in Yoruba). However, the mismatched tonal sequences in Cantonese vocative reduplication are not amenable to either account (namely, the Emergence of the Unmarked account and the Morphological Doubling Theory account). This study pro...
متن کاملA Correspondence-theoretic Account of Fixed Segmentism Reduplication
In fixed segmentism reduplication (FSR), reduplication is accompanied by addition of an affix which partially overwrites the reduplicant (the FSR affix). Nevins (2005) claims that the correspondencetheoretic analysis of FSR proposed by Alderete et al. (1999) faces three serious problems: First, it predicts the existence of unattested FSR systems where the FSR affix is backcopied to the base. Se...
متن کاملA Focus Account for Contrastive Reduplication: Prototypicality and Contrastivity
This paper sets forth the phenomenon of Contrastive Reduplication (CR) in English relevant to the notion of contrastive focus (CF). CF differs from other reduplicative patterns in that rather than the general intensive function, denotation of a more prototypical and default meaning of a lexical item appears from the reduplicated form resulting as a semantic contrast with the meaning of the non-...
متن کاملinterpersonal function of language in subtitling
translation as a comunicative process is always said to be associated with various aspects of meaning loss or gain. subtitling as a mode of translating, due to special discoursal and textual conditions imposed upon it, is believed to be an obvious case of this loss or gain. presenting the spoken sound track of a film in writing and synchronizing the perception of this text by the viewers with...

In this squib I discuss an unusual type of reduplication in which the reduplicant varies not only in terms of its phonemic composition but also in terms of its prosodic shape. The variability in the shape of the reduplicant results from a grammar that does not impose any constraint particular to the shape of the reduplicant per se. Further, I demonstrate that even in cases where the reduplicant...
